Zhou left frustrated as DNF costs him ‘comfortable’ points finish

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu rued a missed opportunity to score points as he retired in the early stages of the Miami Grand Prix.

Zhou scored a point on his F1 debut in Bahrain but has not added to his tally in the four races since – narrowly missing out in Saudi Arabia and Australia, where he finished 11th.

Having qualified 17th in Miami, the Chinese driver made up three places over the opening laps to edge towards the top 10 positions, only for a water leak to strike and end his afternoon.

Zhou: It’s a weekend that we have to forget

Zhou had to watch from the sidelines as teammate Valtteri Bottas drove to a seventh-place finish, which could have been fifth had it not been for a late mistake.

“I think it
was the right call to not damage anything on the engine, [but] it was a bit unfortunate because
it was such a good first few laps,” Zhou told media, including RacingNews365.com, as he reflected on his retirement.

“I was getting past Daniel [Ricciardo], all the
guys ahead, and I feel it was quite comfortable to be in the points today.

“Unfortunately, we missed out again, so it’s a weekend that we have to just forget.”

Zhou had “no warning” before race-ending issue

Zhou was taken by surprise when the problem arose, exclaiming “I can’t believe it” in a radio message broadcast on the world feed.

“It was very strange, because there was no warning in any circumstance, as everything seemed to be working right,” added Zhou.

“I just got asked by the engineer to cool down the a little bit the engine, and after a few laps they asked me to stop the car.

“It’s not the way I wanted to finish because I think it was looking strong from the beginning of the race.”
