Wrexham fans want Hugh Jackman ‘thrown out’ as EFL return ends in disaster | Football | Sport

Wrexham fans on social media called for Hugh Jackman to be banned from the Racecourse in the future after the X-Men star was in attendance for their return to the Football League, only for Phil Parkinson’s side to lose 5-3 against MK Dons. Expectations were high as the Hollywood-backed club competed at EFL level for the first time in 15 years, but were handed a major reality check on the opening day of the season.

A brace from Jonathan Leko alongside Mo Eisa and Daniel Harvie’s strikes after Eughan O’Connell’s own goal sealed the three points for the visitors, as supporters took to social media to insist that Jackman should not return to Wrexham as he was a bad omen.

On Twitter, @PrevYrs17182 wrote: “No More Hugh Jackman !!! bring Paul Rudd back !!!”. Rudd, another Hollywood actor, had been present for the match that sealed Wrexham’s promotion back to League Two.

Their sentiments were echoed by a number of other fans as @sbell007ck also took aim at Jackman, writing: “Is it his [Jackman’s] fault they are getting smashed!”

More fans chimed in and suggested that Jackman may be a jinx, having been expected to take the division by storm. Wrexham were, however, without their star man Paul Mullin due to an injury he suffered in pre-season against Manchester United.

On Twitter, @alinver responded to a post spotting Jackman in north Wales with: “Jinx” while @Smithyd10 also wrote: “Hugh the jinx Jackman. Throw him out of the racecourse haha.”

Jacob Mendy, Jordan Davies and Anthony Forde got the goals for the hosts in a thrilling clash, as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be reminded that there is a big jump in quality between League Two and the National League.

They will hope to have Mullin back sooner rather than later but he is still recovering in the US after suffering a punctured lung, with the recruitment staff on the lookout for replacements.

The Red Dragons, meanwhile, have confirmed the signing of former Premier League ace James McClean from Wigan for a reported £250,000 fee. The Irishman did not make his debut against MK Dons but will get the chance against his former club as Wrexham take on Wigan on Tuesday in the EFL Cup.
