The warm home discount scheme could provide eligible recipients with £140 off their electricity bill for the 2020 to 2021 winter. This money will not be paid directly to the claimant, it is a one off discount to be used between September and March.

So long as people are eligible under this criteria, they should have received a letter from the state telling them how to get the discount.

The letter will detail if they need to call a helpline or not and beyond this, electricity suppliers should apply the discount to bills by March 31 2021.

Those on a low income could also receive the support if their providers offer it and they’re on certain means-tested benefits.

To apply under these circumstances, claimants will need to contact their provider who will decide if they can get the discount.

The government urges claimants in these circumstances to contact their electricity providers as early as possible as the number of discounts offered can be limited.

A full list of suppliers taking part in the scheme can be found on the government’s website but it includes several big names including British Gas, E.ON and SSE.

It should be noted that claimants with pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters will still be eligible for the scheme.

Additionally, those living in mobile homes may also be eligible but applications for the 2020 to 2021 winter months are now closed.

To be eligible for pension credit in the first instance, a person must be living in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached state pension age.

Additionally, their income levels must be below £173.75 if they’re single or £265.20 for couples.

If cold weather and winter fuel payments are claimed on top of this scheme, recipients could receive state support which stretches into several hundred pounds.

Full details on the eligibility for all of this support can be found on the government’s website.
