Sebastian Vettel has defended Mick Schumacher after the Haas driver faced some criticism over his crash at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Schumacher lost control of his VF-22 through the high-speed Swimming Pool section of the Circuit de Monaco on Lap 24, and consequently hit the barriers heavily on the damp track.

The incident caused his car to split into two, and the race was red flagged as marshals worked to repair the barriers.

Fortunately, Schumacher was unharmed in the crash, but it has led to some questions over his performance, with his uncle, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, being openly critical of the mistake.

Vettel believes in Schumacher’s abilities

When asked whether he felt that it took too long for the red flags to be brought out following Schumacher’s crash, Vettel told media, including RacingNews365.com: “I don’t know if there could have been red flags sooner, but I guess it was the right call to repair the barriers.”

In terms of how concerned he was for Schumacher after seeing the incident, Vettel admits that he was relieved to hear that the youngster was okay.

He has also given his support to Schumacher, and urged others to give him a break.

“It’s so easy to get it wrong so quickly,” Vettel explained.

“I don’t know exactly what happened to him, I haven’t seen it. But the main thing is he’s okay.

“I think there’s no doubt he’s capable of doing a lot more than what he’s showing at the minute, but I think you guys need to give him a bit of a break.”
