Ferrari Team Principal has pinpointed their Formula 1 weakness in 2023 as he remains determined to “fix” the Scuderia.

Vasseur was appointed as boss of Ferrari in late 2022, replacing Mattia Binotto who stepped down following the failure to win either title last season, despite an excellent package.

The former Alfa Romeo boss was tasked with turning the strategic and operational errors of Ferrari around, but while he has had some success there, the SF-23 machine is not as fast as the 2022 car.

Indeed, in the first half of the season, Ferrari only has two pole positions (one inherited) and three podiums to its name all via Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz yet to finish in the top three.

Vasseur made clear what the weakness was with the Maranello team and how he would rectify the issues plaguing Ferrari.

Vasseur’s vow

“[We have not got] the results that we were expecting, but it is what it is and we have to work [to fix it],” Vasseur told media including RacingNews365.

“The feeling is that in Qualifying, we are very close behind Mercedes and even with Max [Verstappen] sometimes and we have to improve, but we are not far away.

“It is more on the race pace that Red Bull is miles away compared to everybody.

“The Qualifying results are crucial to be in the clean air and every single car is affected by the dirty air and we are hurting the tyres.

“As soon as we are starting P2, we are in much better shape.

“I have spent the last 35 years of my life on the pit-wall and maybe on even single Monday of my career, there is a long list of mistakes. Sometimes you can see it, sometimes you cannot.

“But the job of the Team Principal is to go [through] the list with the team members and fix it.

“I am very open in saying that we are making too many mistakes, but I think it is true that if you ask the same question to Toto [Wolff, Mercedes boss], he will be approximately the same as we are.”
