The United States has a “very strong, unofficial relationship with Taiwan,” according to US State Department Counselor Derek Chollet.
“We’ve worked to deepen that partnership over the last year and a half,” Mr Chollet told Sky News Australia.
Mr Chollet said US policy on Taiwan had not changed and that “we do not support Taiwan’s independence”.
“That said, we have a very important set of relationships with Taiwan.”
