Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman named the officer as William Evans, an 18-year police veteran. Mr Evans was killed when a car rammed him and another officer into a barricade on Friday.

Capitol Police said the other officer is in a “stable and non-threatening condition.”

The killer was shot after exiting the vehicle and lunging at officers, police said.

The suspect later died at a nearby hospital.

Police also said the man was not on any watch lists and appeared to be acting alone.

Speaking of the attack in a statement, President Joe Biden and his wife Jill, said they are “heartbroken.”
