Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has praised Ange Postecoglou for being ‘very attentive’ during his recovery from recent injuries. Bentancur has been forced to deal with more than his fair share of injury problems this season, with the 26-year-old having made just 12 league appearances since the start of the campaign.

The Spurs ace missed pre-season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament before picking up an ankle injury in November, which kept him out of action for over a month. Bentancur has since played in all of Tottenham’s league games since the turn of the year, chipping in with a goal in the draw against Manchester United in January.

Discussing his injury setbacks in an interview with Sky Sports, Bentancur was full of praise for the way he was treated by his manager while he was on the treatment table.

He said: “He was always very attentive during my time out, checking how I was feeling on a physical and personal level. He showed me his support and, once I was back, I could really see that the way of playing he has implemented is incredible. I think, as a team, we have shown that throughout the season.”

Bentancur went on to explain that he believes his injuries have helped him to grow both as a player and a person, given the trials and tribulations of recovering from not one but two serious setbacks.

“With the cruciate injury, I learned a lot,” he said. “I had it in my head that it was going to be a long journey and so I prepared mentally for months of recuperation. It was a long recovery. I think on the second or third day was when it dawned on me how long I’d be out for.

“I was with my girlfriend, and I think that was the only day where I had to leave the room to go and cry. But I had the support of my family, my loved ones and friends and the support of the club, my teammates, the coaching staff throughout which helped me a lot. I have had a resilient personality all my life, but the injury has matured me mentally as well, both professionally and in my daily life.”

He continued: “As for my second injury, I’d got back to feeling good and I was starting for Spurs and then I suffered a blow to my ankle,” said Bentancur. “From the first day I found out what I had, which were four ligaments that broke in my ankle, they had given me 12 weeks.

“The truth is that I had been quite down and frustrated having been injured again. But with Juan Carlos, the physio who treated me here at the club, I did everything to get back. I soon got down to recovery and was able to return to action two months earlier than had been expected. I’m getting back into the swing of things and now I want to return to my previous standards.”

Bentancur will certainly be hoping to stay injury-free until the end of the season as Tottenham hunt down a place in the Premier League‘s top four. They are currently two points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa and will be looking to stay within touching distance by beating Fulham in their next outing this weekend.
