Tottenham legend Clive Allen has suggested that Manchester City would be the perfect club for Harry Kane to join this summer, in order to give the 27-year-old the best chance of breaking Alan Shearer’s record of 260 Premier League goals. Pep Guardiola’s side, along with Manchester United and Chelsea, are said to be tracking Kane’s situation in north London amid claims that he is determined to seek a new challenge ahead of next season.
The England skipper has played a crucial role for Spurs throughout the current campaign, leading the charge with 36 goal contributions in 33 top-flight appearances.
However, the club’s lack of silverware has tested his patience for a number of years, with last month’s Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of City pushing him over the edge.
Kane has informed Spurs that he wants to leave the club in the summer transfer window, while City, United and Chelsea have already made contact with the player’s representatives to express their interest in his services, according to Sky Sports.
The Red Devils have reportedly cooled their desire to sign a new striker after Edinson Cavani penned a new one-year deal earlier this month.
Despite this, the 20-time Premier League champions are long-term admirers of the Tottenham man, and appear to be in the frame for his signature ahead of what could be a glorious opportunity to bring him to Old Trafford this summer.
Allen, who scored 76 goals for Spurs between 1984 and 1988, has claimed that Kane will be hoping to join another Premier League club in order to pursue Shearer’s benchmark.
The 59-year-old declared that a move to City, rather than United, would be the best option for the Walthamstow native in order to realise his dream of achieving greatness.
Allen told talkSPORT: “In the current climate, is Kane going to fetch £150million and is there a football club out there that can pay that sort of money?
“If there is, there can only be one or two suitors – Manchester City, who have already said they won’t pay £100m for Haaland, and Paris Saint-Germain, who already have Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. If Mbappe leaves PSG, will Kane go to Paris?
“I don’t think Harry Kane would be thinking that way [because of] his goalscoring record and Alan Shearer’s record in the Premier League.
“His form over the last few years has been phenomenal and he must have an eye on it. I think that will be one of his big targets.
“I have to say, Manchester City seems to be the best fit. Chelsea is unlikely. I can understand Man United’s interest, but the perfect fit for Harry would be Manchester City.”
The newly-crowned Premier League champions are expected to be in the market for a world-class forward this summer, with Sergio Aguero set to leave the club upon the expiry of his contract to end a decade-long spell at the Etihad Stadium.
Meanwhile, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie recently suggested that Kane’s departure would cripple Spurs, who would be hard-pressed to find a worthy successor in the current climate.
“You take him out of there and who are you going to get that’s going to fill 25 plus goals a season? You’ll do well, I’ll tell you that now,” Hendrie told FootballFanCast.
“That could really destroy Spurs, and that’s what I feel holds the cards on many things at this moment in time at that football club.”
