Tottenham‘s pursuit of Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez may be edging closer to fruition, with the San Siro giants potentially on the brink of completing a move for Lazio’s Joaquin Correa, according to reports. Spurs have been credited with a strong interest in landing Martinez ahead of this month’s transfer deadline, with new boss Nuno Espirito Santo eyeing additional reinforcements at the top of the pitch.
The 23-year-old helped Inter to win their first Serie A title since 2010 last season, chipping in with 17 goals and 10 assists in the process.
Recent reports have suggested that Spurs have agreed a fee in the region of £60million to bring Martinez to north London over the coming weeks.
However, Inter are said to have strenuously denied this claim, with the Italian champions reportedly looking to keep hold of the striker into next season and beyond.
They are already poised to lose Romelu Lukaku, who is widely expected to join Chelsea in a club-record £97m move back to Stamford Bridge.
It remains to be seen whether Spurs will be able to complete the signing of Martinez after Lukaku’s return to west London is confirmed, barring any significant last-minute developments.
The pair scored a combined total of 49 goals in all competitions last season and Inter could be short of firepower if both players leave the club this summer.
However, it seems as though the addition a new striker could be on their agenda, with Lazio forward Correa set to make the switch in the near future, according to RadioRadio.
It is claimed that Inter are ‘expected’ to seal the 26-year-old’s signature in what would be a surprising twist to the tale.
Correa has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Aston Villa and Everton said to be particularly keen.
Meanwhile, Inter are currently in the midst of a crippling financial crisis that has played a significant role in their summer transfer activity to date.
Achraf Hakimi has already been shipped out to PSG in an attempt to balance the books, while Lukaku looks to be next in line for the exit door.
Inter have spent less than £20m on new players since the beginning of the transfer window as a result of their situation, but a move for Correa is now said to be in the works.
The proposed switch would suggest that Inter have moved to replace Martinez in the event of his departure, which could be good news for Spurs.

The two players are fairly similar in their respective playing styles, with Lazio utilising Correa as a second striker while Martinez excelled in a supporting role alongside Lukaku last season.
If Inter’s decision to push for Correa has been influenced by Tottenham’s interest in Martinez, then a move to the Premier League for the latter might soon be on the horizon.
Spurs boss Nuno was quizzed on his reported desire to sign the Inter man on Sunday but refused to comment on the matter.
“I will not speak about any player,” the 47-year-old told reporters. “I will only speak about my players, Tottenham players, nothing else.”
