Thousands Evacuated as Wildfire Rages in Gran Canaria

An out-of-control wildfire continued to rage on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria Tuesday, August 20, forcing the evacuation of around 9,000 people according to local government officials. The fire covered 10,000 hectares by Tuesday. The land and aerial resources used in combatting the fire were the largest ever deployed for a blaze in the Canary Islands, according to Ángel Víctor Torres, the island’s president. This footage, filmed by emergency services workers of the Puntagorda ATBRIF battalion, and uploaded to Twitter on August 18, shows the fire burning in the Valleseco municipality.
