Real Madrid have confirmed that Thibaut Courtois has sustained a knee injury, just days after he returned to first-team training. The goalkeeper has not featured for Los Blancos so far this season as he was previously recovering from an ACL injury.
Courtois has been one of the best goalkeepers in Europe over the past few years, winning numerous trophies with Madrid and impressing whilst on international duty with Belgium.
However, he has not featured for Carlo Ancelotti’s side since early August when Madrid faced Juventus in a pre-season friendly. The ex-Chelsea star sustained a serious ACL injury just a few days later which saw him leave training in tears, with surgery on the issue immediately deemed necessary.
Courtois was expected to be ruled out for the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign, though it recently became apparent that he could feature during the latter stages of this season after cruising through his recovery.
But things have gone from bad to worse for the ex-Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, with Madrid announcing that their No. 1 has sustained a fresh injury. The La Liga outfit released a statement on Tuesday night which read: “After the tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois, he has been diagnosed with a torn internal meniscus in his right knee. The injury occurred during today’s training session. Evolution pending.”
Courtois will understandably be frustrated with the nightmare setback, with reports speculating that the goalkeeper will now need a further two months to recover from the torn meniscus, which is likely to mean that he will not be match-fit to feature for the remainder of the season.
