The medal sent to the supreme leader is a prize that Putin had made up, with a medal reserved for Second World War combatants or Nazi camp survivors. Kim was awarded the commemorative coin to mark the 75th anniversary of the Red Army’s victory over Nazi Germany, said a statement released from the Russian embassy in Pyongyang.

Russia awarded Kim Jong the medal to honour his maintaining of soviet soldiers legacy in the secretive state.

The embassy said they were paying respect to Kim’s “great personal contribution to the memory of the victims of the Soviet citizens and caring for the safety of the graves and memory of the Soviet soldiers in the Korean People’s Republic of Korea”.

The award titled “75 years of Victory on the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” was presented by Alexander Matsegora, Russia’s ambassador of North Korea to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the North Korea, Ri Son-gwon.

Kim Jong, however, was not present during the ceremony, after briefly showing up open a fertiliser plant over the weekend, dispelling ongoing myth’s that he had died.

During the proceedings Russian and North Korean officials reportedly wore masks, despite the state claiming not to have had a single case of coronavirus.

Russia’s state-run TASS news agency has reported 11 mass graves and 345 individual graves in North Korea contain the remains of 1,375 Soviet troops.

More than 4700 Soviet troops died in battles to liberate Korea from the Japanese in 1945, the outlet said.

It comes as North Koreans have reportedly been told that the US and South Korea are purposely spreading coronavirus into the country through items sent into the country.

A source in South Pyongan Province told newspaper Daily NK that the authorities are disseminating the idea that the US and South Korea caused coronavirus in the secretive state.

They said that a coronavirus prevention session was held during a recent administrative unit meeting where a lecturer warned attendees of the threat from other nations.

The newspaper claimed that the lecturer told attendees that the US and South Korea are “spraying the coronavirus on various items” before sending them to North Korea.

The lecturer also said that North Koreans should “be alert” and if they discover any unusual items they should not touch them and be sure to report it immediately, the source added.

The country has continued to insist to the Weekly Health Organisation that they have had no positive cases of coronavirus confirmed in the country.

According to a representative in Pyongyang, 709 people have been tested as of April 2, with no positive cases being confirmed.

In an email, Dr Edwin Salvador wrote: “As of April 2, 709 people – 11 foreigners and 698 nationals – have been tested for COVID-19.

“There is no report of a COVID-19 case. There are 509 people in quarantine – two foreigners and 507 nationals.”

He added: “Since December 31, 24,842 people have been released from quarantine, which includes 380 foreigners.”

The country has been keenly disinfecting the country during the pandemic and the director of the emergency anti-epidemic headquarters said that the efforts to keep the virus out of the country had been a success.

“Not one single person has been infected with the novel coronavirus in our country so far,” he said.
