Orygen’s Executive Director Patrick McGorry says mental health was a “worldwide crisis” before the pandemic.
“We have got some, I would say, base camp type services like Headspace … the federal government has actually built a bit of base camp,” Mr McGorry told Sky News host Alan Jones.
“The state governments, in general, have really, not actually even done the basic job they were supposed to.
“I think the governments would do a lot more if the public…basically showed every politician that they expected something to be done about this in the same way they expect something to be done about COVID.
“The public need to find their voice, and I’ve helped to set up an organisation called Australians for Mental Health, which is meant to mobilise the voice of ordinary Australians, every family that’s affected by mental illness…stand up and say what you need.”
