Israel Adesanya couldn’t help but laugh at Jon Jones’ performance against Dominick Reyes this weekend. The future Hall-of-Famer defended his light-heavyweight title against ‘The Devastator’ early on Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 247 in Houston, Texas.
The consensus pound-for-pound king retained his title via unanimous decision, though the manner of his victory divided opinion.
In the eyes of many, the previously-undefeated Reyes arguably won three rounds of the five rounds – in which he imposed his will on the champion.
The judges, however, didn’t see it that way – scoring the contest 49-46 in his favour.
Amongst the interested observers of Jones’ fight was middleweight champion Adesanya, who has been engaged in a war of words with his 205lb counterpart for the last few months.
Like many of his comments, Adesanya’s tweet will soon come to the attention of Jones – who will no doubt send another stern message The Last Stylebender’s way.
Jones’ victory over Reyes marked his 11th defence of the 205lb crown, which he first claimed nearly nine years ago.
The New Yorker believes his takedowns played a huge role in him being given the nod, saying: “Dominick did a tremendous job.
“Dominick you have totally earned my respect, man. That was a great fight. I tell you what, I think the difference in the fight was the takedowns.
“I couldn’t keep him down for too long, but I was taking him down. I’m pretty sure I took him down in at least three of the rounds.
“It was close in the kickboxing exchanges, he landed some tough shots, but I believe my takedowns got me the edge. I knew it was a really close fight, and I turned it on in the fifth.
“Between the first rounds and the fact that I completely dominated that fifth round, I feel like he hit me once for every six times I hit him in the fifth round.
“That fifth round won me the fight, and the takedowns won me the fight. I believe with my whole heart that I won that fight.”
