The video shows a man getting out of a vehicle and opening fire near a shopping centre in Korat, Thailand. Jakraphanth Thomma opened fire at a number of locations including the shopping centre. Footage shared on social media shows people running for cover as shots are heard. 17 people have been killed and 21 injured.
The shooter, who has been posting sick pictures and videos online, has reportedly taken hostages at the Terminal 21 shopping centre.
Police said that he stole a vehicle from his barracks before attacking people with an assault rifle.
A defence ministry spokesman told BBC Thai that Jakraphanth Thomma, a junior officer, had attacked his commanding officer before stealing a gun and ammunition from a military camp.
A police officer said the soldier had been involved in an argument about a land deal and shot two people who were involved, another soldier and a woman. He said a third person was wounded.
The man then took a gun from the base where he is stationed outside the city and drove to the mall, shooting at people along the way.
The mall was shut down and the street outside was closed while authorities attempted to arrest the gunman.
The man who was identified by police as the suspect had posted on his Facebook page earlier in the day that “Death is inevitable for everyone.”
He also posted a picture of what appeared to be his hand holding a gun.
The incident is still ongoing. The shooter was still in the Century 21 shopping mall and had not yet been apprehended, the police said.
