State pension warning: The free bus pass age will be rising – when will yours go up? | Personal Finance | Finance

Free bus pass age to rise

However, under the Government’s current schedule, the state pension age will be rising over the coming years. This means retirees in England and Wales will need to wait longer to receive their free bus passes.

The state pension age will be rising to 67 between 2026 and 2028. Beyond this it will rise to 68 by 2046 and it could move into the 70s over the coming decades.

The Government has argued these increases are necessary in the face of rising life expectancies.

However, this premise has been called into question recently and the state has been urged to reconsider its plans. In late November, a fall in life expectancy in the UK was seen.

Average life expectancy in England fell by 7.8 weeks between 2018 and 2020, and in Scotland it fell by 11 weeks, according to data from the ONS.
