KNOW YOUR INGREDIENTS
You might spot these ingredients on the back of bottles, but if you’re not quite sure what skincare benefits they have, we’re here to help…
Aloe vera: There’s a reason it’s used to help ease sunburn – this soothing plant can reduce skin irritation and inflammation.
Hyaluronic acid: Very commonly used in face creams and serums, it can plump skin and give it a good dose of hydration.
Green tea: This contains antimicrobial properties, which could make it beneficial for those suffering from blemishes.
Cucumber: Boasting anti-inflammatory properties, as well as essential nutrients, cucumber can help soothe and rejuvenate skin.
BEST FOR MULTI-PURPOSE MISTING
Huda Beauty Glow Coco Hydrating Mist, buy it here for £30
Use this tropical-scented spray before make-up to prep skin, after make-up to set, and throughout the day to refresh.
Our tester says: “It’s more common for me to use some sort of face spray before make-up or during the day, so I loved that this one can be used repeatedly without it building up on the skin. The nozzle sprays fine and wide, and I really felt like it was hydrating my skin.”
BEST FOR MAKING MAKE-UP LAST
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, buy it here for £26
It has an oil-free, lightweight and hydrating formula, and promises to set your make-up for up to 16 hours.
Our tester says: “A few heavy duty setting sprays I’ve tried in the past have felt sticky or heavy, but this was a dream. It has green tea and aloe vera in it, and feels so light and refreshing. I tried it before a birthday evening out and I was amazed by how in-place my make-up looked after hours of wear, even though I was sweaty!”
BEST FOR TAKING ON TRAVELS
Anastasia Beverly Hills Mini Dewy Set Setting Sprays, buy it here for £16
Choose from the original Dewy Set spray, or two new tropical scent versions of it. All three are in mini form and set make-up, help skin to retain moisture and give it a dewy boost.
Our tester says: “I loved all three scents, and they all look so cute. The pineapple is my favourite but the mango version and the original coconut and vanilla are also lovely. I really notice how hydrated my skin feels after using one once I’ve applied my make-up.”
BEST FOR A COMFORTABLE FINISH
IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Setting Spray+, buy it here for £22
Enriched with hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, this is another spritz that promises to lock your make-up in place for 16 hours.
Our tester says: “This has a pretty powerful spray – it’ll cover from your hairline to your neck in one pump – but it doesn’t leave the face looking wet at all. It also doesn’t feel sticky on the skin, but does feel like it’s keeping it all in place somehow. I haven’t needed to wear make-up for 16 hours straight for months but if the need arose, I think this would do the job.”
BEST FOR A DEWY BOOST
Lottie London Dew Bomb Setting Spray, buy it here for £8.95
Infused with aloe vera extract and a blue light blocking active, it claims to protect skin from phone and laptop screens, while also giving it a glowy glass-like sheen.
Our tester says: “I don’t know if it’s blue light or not, but all this working from home has made my skin a lot more reactive. I started spritzing this on to see if it helped, and I think it does. My face feels a lot less dry and tight in the day, and it does give a really lovely dewy effect.”
BEST FOR A SHINE-FREE FINISH
Flower Beauty Seal The Deal Long-Lasting Setting Spray, buy it here for £7.99
This great value mist will protect your make-up from sweat and smudging, and leave skin with a matte finish. Flower Beauty also does a hydrating version for those who prefer a more dewy effect to the skin.
Our tester says: “I was immediately impressed with just how fine the mist was on this – it felt just like air – and I see the possible need for a mattifying product during hot summer days. However, the pump on mine broke after only a couple of uses, making it not quite such a bargain after all. Oh well, but it was good while it lasted!”
BEST FOR A SUPER-FINE SPRAY
e.l.f. Stay All Night Micro-Fine Setting Mist, buy it here for £9
Made with cucumber, aloe vera and green tea, this will soothe the skin as it helps to keep make-up in place all day.
Our tester says: “Excellent mist action – strong enough to feel like it’s covering your face, but doesn’t spit at you or leave you dripping. This is a slightly sticky feeling (shake the bottle before spritzing) but it’s not unpleasant, and at least it feels like it’s doing something. For the price, I’d be happy to buy this again.”
