Russian missile strikes children’s hospital in Kyiv as explosions rock capital | World | News

Russian forces launched a barrage of missiles against Ukraine‘s capital, Kyiv, on the morning of August 11.

The country’s Air Force said Moscow shot Kinzhal missiles against the city, where air defence was triggered.

Widespread reports spoke of major explosions being heard across Kyiv, and the city’s mayor said among the areas hit was a children’s hospital.

The official, Vitali Klitschko, took to messaging platform Telegram to report: “Fragments of a rocket fell on the territory of one of the capital’s children’s hospitals.”

The mayor added “no injuries or damage” to the structure had been reported yet, and that emergency services had reached the scene.

In a different message, Mr Klitschko urged people to seek refuge in bunkers, saying: “Explosions in the city stay in the shelters please”

Among those who were quick to report Kyiv was once again under the attack of Russian missiles, was the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Dame Melinda Simmons.

She wrote on Twitter: “Air raid on Kyiv. Sheltering at work. It’s noisy out there. Stay safe Kyiv friends.”

On Friday morning, several other Ukrainian cities were targeted by Russian air strikes.

Suspilne, the country broadcaster, reported people hearing explosions in Khmelnytskyi, a city in western Ukraine, and Vinnytsia, on the Southern Bug River.

And in Kherson, at least a woman and a man were left injured as a result of artillery fire launched against a high-rise building.

A map of Ukraine shared by the country’s government’s media platform, UNITED24Media, shows the whole nation had rung with air alerts in the previous hours.

The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal is a Russian hypersonic air-launched ballistic missile with a reported range of 1,500 to 2,000km.

The missile was one of the strategic weapons unveiled by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2018, and can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads.

The air strikes launched on Friday morning by Russia come as Ukraine continues to fight Moscow’s troops on the eastern and southern fronts.
