‘Rookie’ Daniel Ricciardo needs aid from MCL35M updates

Daniel Ricciardo said he is working with the McLaren team to create the upgrades that will bring him up to speed in the MCL35M.

The Aussie has joined McLaren with the view of competing for championships in the coming years, but so far he is struggling to perform at the level of team-mate Lando Norris.

The Imola race weekend very much belonged to Norris as he made himself a shock pole contender, while on Sunday Ricciardo was asked to move aside for Norris who proceeded to disappear up the road and claim a second podium finish of his career.

Ricciardo is still adapting to his new machinery at McLaren, but feels upgrades are his only way of driving the car as he wants to.

“Certainly I felt like today I took a step forward in terms of my confidence in the car,” Ricciardo told Sky F1 after FP2.

“I’ve been working on everything. The car currently rewards a bit of a different technique and style. That’s from turning in and the way you hit the brake and get back on the throttle. It’s a little unique so I’ve been working on that in the simulator.

“Some corners I can use my style. But it seems the vast majority of the time that the best way to drive it is a different style [to mine]. Until we get some updates, I’m trying to let the guys know where the weaknesses are and how I would like to drive the car. Until then, I’ll just learn how to drive it as it is.”

Understandably though Ricciardo does not feel comfortable with giving himself time. He is a veteran of Formula 1, yet is being treated like a “rookie” at McLaren.

“It’s hard to take because I’m a veteran of a sport so why should I need time? I’m experienced coming into this team but everyone’s kind of treating me like a rookie,” he said.

“In a way it is true because I am rookie with this car and this environment.

“I was annoyed after Imola that I couldn’t do more but Andreas [Seidl] and the guys are just like ‘chill dude, it’s going to come’. I’ll obviously try to not chill too much but I’m aware it will come eventually.”
