Red Bull have further added to their Powertrains division by recruiting Phil Prew, a well-respected chief engineer at Mercedes.

When new engine regulations come into effect within Formula 1 in 2026, Red Bull intend to manufacture their own power units under the Red Bull Powertrains department, and in preparation have signed several big names to join the team.

One of these is Prew. Whilst his name may not be well known to fans, Prew has been a key figure in the Mercedes engine division for many years, and has built a long and successful career in the sport.

Prew previously worked with Red Bull Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey at McLaren. From 1997 to 2016, he served as a race engineer to David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez, among others, before moving to the Mercedes engine department as Chief Engineer.

Horner pleased with Red Bull Powertrains development

Since announcing the Red Bull Powertrains project in early 2021, Red Bull have been on a recruitment drive, with several staff already been lured from Mercedes over recent months.

The Silver Arrows’ factory is based only a 45-minute drive away from Red Bull’s headquarters in Milton Keynes.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner feels pleased with how the plans are developing so far.

“All the key players are now in place,” Horner told media, including RacingNews365.com, over the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.

“We’ve got our management structure in place, and obviously they’re hard at work on what will be – hopefully soon to be confirmed – 2026 regulations.”

Prew a key factor in Mercedes’ success

In regards to Prew, his exact role has yet to be announced, but Horner is thrilled to have him join Red Bull Powertrains.

“I’m delighted that Phil is going to be joining the team,” Horner said.

“He has a phenomenal track record. He’s been a key component of Mercedes’ recent success, and it’s another statement of intent of where we want to be with the power unit.

“I think we’ve assembled great depth within the business, and it’s fantastic to see everything coming together. Phil’s one of a few key signings recently that will add to the very talented group of people that we’ve already assembled.

“Adrian has known Phil from years ago, so obviously I consulted his opinion.”
