Real Madrid star Raphael Varane is expected to join Manchester United because he wants more money, it has been claimed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the France international to partner Harry Maguire at the back next term. And that could be about to happen.
It’s been a positive start to the summer transfer window for Manchester United.
Fans could have been forgiven for feeling glum after the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal in May, a loss that meant they’ve now gone four years without any silverware.
But the Glazers, who were under the cosh following the European Super League debacle earlier in the year, are now ready to invest again.
United have already agreed a deal to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, with the England international set to officially complete a £73million move to Old Trafford once his involvement at Euro 2020 comes to an end.
And they’ve also announced the return of goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
Now, Spanish journalist Sergio Valentin has opened up on the Varane situation – expressing a belief the defender will move to Old Trafford because he ‘wants more money’.

He signed for Real Madrid back in the summer transfer window of 2011, rejecting the advances of Sir Alex Ferguson in order to make the move to the Bernabeu.
And, since then, he’s been a huge hit.
Varane has won three La Liga titles during his decade in Spain, despite Los Blancos often having to battle it out with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the prize.
And he’s also scooped four Champions League titles, too, making him one of the most-decorated players in the history of the competition.
United will have to offer huge money to Varane in order to win the race for his signature, with Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea also admirers.
Yet they can be understood for feeling wary given the way they were used by Sergio Ramos in a similar situation six years ago.
Ramos openly flirted with the Red Devils and encouraged their interest – only to use them in order to obtain a new contract with Real Madrid instead.
And that means United are cautious, despite looking to close a deal for Varane 10 years on from Ferguson’s failed attempt.
Speaking recently, former United star Luke Chadwick opened up on the Real Madrid star – and insisted his old side should do everything possible to bring him in.
“If you could pick any centre half in the world to go and partner Harry Maguire it would be Varane,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.
“He’s an absolute Rolls Royce of a player, you don’t win the amount of trophies he’s had without an incredible mentality.
“With Ramos leaving as well, Paris Saint-Germain seem to be showing an interest in both of those players, but in terms of what United need at this time, Varane would be a dream signing if they could get that over the line.
“PSG can offer more in terms of wages, but Varane’s another player who’s never played in the Premier League, so it depends if it’s the financial incentive or that playing opportunity that means more to him.”
United last raided Real in 2014, paying close to £60m to land Angel Di Maria.
But the Argentina international struggled at the club for 12 months before joining PSG instead.
