McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has criticised himself for failing to learn from his mistakes during the first-half of his rookie Formula 1 campaign.

The Australian replaced Daniel Ricciardo alongside Lando Norris and has performed well, collecting 34 points to sit 11th in the standings, claiming a best Grand Prix result of fourth in the British Grand Prix.

Despite his impressive performances in the second MCL60, Melbourne-native Piastri feels there have been a number of occasions where he has failed to learn mistakes he has made.

Piastri’s mistakes

“It has been pretty solid and definitely ups and downs for myself,” Piastri told media including RacingNews365 before his second-place in the Belgian Grand Prix Sprint.

“As a team, we’ve clearly made massive steps forwards, but I think I’ve always been confident from the moment I joined the team that we were getting the most out of what we had and when we had the opportunity to fight right at the front, we would be ready.

“We’ve shown [over the British and Hungarian Grands Prix] that we’ve been very strong operationally and with the car.

“Silverstone has probably been my best weekend to date, Budapest was quite good, but still needed some polishing in a few areas.

“There have been maybe a few too many mistakes for what I would like. I know that seems rto be expected being a rookie, but there’s been a few too many.

“Before the season, I said if I was to make mistakes, I want to try and make them once and learn from them and not make them again.

“But there has been a couple of times where I’ve made a similar mistake, but I do feel like I am improving on that.”
