Charities are seeing people every day who are facing impossible choices when it comes to spending or getting into debt.

He added: “To get them back into work, we need to give them the right level of support to meet their bills.

“Increasing the value of Universal Credit would make a huge difference to people looking for work and better support them back into employment.”

In response, a spokesperson for the DWP told the Daily Record: “We’re providing extensive support to those on the lowest incomes, including putting an average of £1,000 more per year into the pockets of working families through changes to the Universal Credit taper rate, and increasing the minimum wage.”
