Pressing from the front, as they did well throughout the game, forced City into an error as Nathan Ake was forced to clear off the line, with Gabriel Martinelli unable to tap into an empty net from close range.

From the resulting goal kick, and while fans watching at home were still being shown replays of the Martinelli miss, Magalhaes clattered into Gabriel Jesus and was given his second yellow of the match.

It would be near-on impossible to argue the defender didn’t deserve his marching orders, but it exposed the biggest fault in Arsenal’s current side – the lack of experience.

Arteta has done brilliantly well to create a new youth-focused side, with Emile Smith Rowe, Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Bukayo Saka and Martinelli all looking impressive recently.
