Manchester United’s squad would reportedly back Mason Greenwood’s reintegration at Old Trafford with Red Devils chiefs set to make a decision on the forward’s future. Greenwood’s United career appeared to be over when he was sent on loan to Getafe at the start of the season.

The club’s hierarchy took the decision to allow the 22-year-old to kickstart his career abroad after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped criminal charges following the withdrawal of a key witness. Greenwood had always denied the charges.

United insisted at the time that it was unlikely that Greenwood would play for the club again. However, new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently insisted that the door was not closed on the one-cap England international making a shock return.

Now, the Sun reports that United’s squad are not against Greenwood playing alongside them again. The academy graduate has scored six La Liga goals in 24 appearances this season, with there reportedly being a feeling that his goals would be beneficial to Erik ten Hag’s side.

A source allegedly told the newspaper: “His team-mates would not be against him returning to Old Trafford. They know all about the background and understand how controversial it would be to have him back.

“Their decision is a footballing one, pure and simple. United have struggled to score goals this season and they need a player like Mason. They’re watching him score and create goals for Getafe every week.”

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022. He went over 18 months without playing competitive football while his case was investigated by the CPS. After the charges were dropped, United conducted their own probe and ultimately decided that he should be allowed to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Asked if a fresh decision will be made over Greenwood’s future, INEOS chief Ratcliffe responded: “It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.

“The process will be: understand the facts not the hype and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of values which is basically is he a good guy or not, and answer could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it.”

Greenwood will return to United at the end of the season. A decision will subsequently be made on where his future lies, with some reports suggesting that the Red Devils are holding out for a big transfer fee.
