Dr Helmut Marko has given a simple explanation for Max Verstappen’s pit-lane impatience in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix practice.

With Verstappen having sat out FP1 in favour of rookie driver Jake Dennis to fulfill the handing over of his car, the second session, under the lights, was a heavily-disrupted affair.

Both Carlos Sainz and Nico Hulkenberg crashed to bring out the red flags, and with the clock still ticking down, this ate into precious practice time, with FP3 set to be held in daylight conditions.

After the short Hulkenberg delay, Verstappen was seen to be forcing his way past Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell when exiting the pits – labelling the actions “silly” as he forced his way past.

Red Bull Motorsport Advisor Marko gave a simple reason behind Verstappen’s impatience, with just over 15 minutes remaining on the clock.

“We wanted to do two timed laps on the Medium tyres, and two timed laps on the Soft tyres,” Marko explained to Motorsport Magazin.

“It just worked out in the end for Max, but everyone else was dawdling.”
