Manchester United’s deal for Raphael Varane may not happen unless they stump up more cash, it has been claimed. The France international is a top transfer target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And while there’s been plenty of talk about a potential move to Old Trafford, it appears a deal isn’t straightforward.
Manchester United have been cautious with their pursuit of Varane.
Burned by Sergio Ramos in 2015, when he used the Red Devils’ interest to secure himself a big new contract at Real Madrid, they’ve been wary of being burned again.
However, it has become increasingly clear over the past week that Varane wants to move to Old Trafford.
He’s supposedly told club president Florentino Perez that he wants to leave the Bernabeu after a glittering decade in Spain, where he’s won 18 major trophies.
Yet while that’s the case, there could be a twist in the tale.

Should United fail in their mission to sign Varane, it’s possible they’ll go after alternatives amid concerns over the consistency of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.
One player admired is Pau Torres.
The Spain international flourished for Villarreal last term, helping them secure Champions League football by winning the Europa League.
United may even go after Torres should they manage to break Real on Varane, with Solskjaer looking to sign two centre-backs in the same transfer window.
Another alternative is Jules Kounde.

The Sevilla star also enjoyed a positive campaign last time out, which came after he’d helped his own side to Europa League glory in 2020.
Tottenham, as things stand, appear favourites in the race to sign the France international.
But United’s interest does exist and it’ll be intriguing to see whether they’re forced into a possible hijack.
Speaking recently, meanwhile, Luke Chadwick implored his old side to land Varane.
“If you could pick any centre half in the world to go and partner Harry Maguire it would be Varane,” Chadwick told CaughtOffside.
“He’s an absolute Rolls Royce of a player, you don’t win the amount of trophies he’s had without an incredible mentality.
“With Ramos leaving as well, Paris Saint-Germain seem to be showing an interest in both of those players, but in terms of what United need at this time, Varane would be a dream signing if they could get that over the line.
“PSG can offer more in terms of wages, but Varane’s another player who’s never played in the Premier League, so it depends if it’s the financial incentive or that playing opportunity that means more to him.”
