Paul Merson has accused Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of “people-pleasing” with his lack of cutting edge in Tuesday night’s surprise 2-1 defeat to Young Boys in Switzerland. The Red Devils started their European adventure strong thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener but the game was then flipped on its head when Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card.

Young Boys then seized the initiative and began taking the game to United before steaming their way to all three points.

Solskjaer was heavily criticised in the aftermath of the game for his failure to keep United on top and in control of the match.

Many reference Chelsea’s recent performance with 10 men against Liverpool at Anfield and there was of course a stark contrast between the two.

United used all five subs but young forward Mason Greenwood was still left on the bench in Switzerland.

“I worry because it seems to be its people-pleasing, I would have been like Cristiano you’re coming off, this is for the team. He kept Ronaldo on for a long, long time in the game.

“You’re playing with 10 men, save Ronaldo, they haven’t been playing well, they got battered at Wolves but they didn’t take their chances, it was heads or tails against Newcastle. Then they got beat by a pub team in terms of Champions League.”

It’s not the first time Merson has demanded more of United since Ronaldo’s return was confirmed and he believes nothing other than that Premier League title would be acceptable for the club this season.

“Will Manchester United win the league? That is the fairy tale,” he said.

“There is no point Ronaldo coming back to Old Trafford and winning the Golden Boot, it’s all about winning the league.

“Solskjaer is managing the biggest club in the world of football, the pressure is on all the time. They have to win the league.

“Bringing Ronaldo, one of the best two players in world football for a considerable amount of time, has to be to win the league.

“Please don’t tell me they are bringing him in to sell shirts. Who wins you the league: Ronaldo or Harry Kane? For me, Kane does.

“If I’m the manager of a football club, I need players who are going to win me the title, and I’m not sure Ronaldo is.”
