Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been brutally slammed by former Tottenham star Rafael Van der Vaart.
Maguire was bought by United in the summer with the Red Devils paying Leicester £80million for the England centre-back.
The hope for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was that Maguire would shore up his defence after a leaky season.
But it hasn’t been the case with Manchester United keeping just two clean sheets during the current Premier League campaign.
They conceded a late equaliser against Liverpool with the table-toppers earning a point against United.
And Van der Vaart has criticised Maguire and admitted he has had doubts over the central defender since the summer.
“When I watch an amateur game on Sunday, I find three players playing like him [Maguire]. I’m serious,” Van der Vaart said on Ziggo Sport.
“It may sound silly, but he will not hear it anyway. After all, we’re talking about a €90 million transfer here. Then [Virgil] van Dijk is worth €300 million.
“It’s funny because during the Nations League, I was doing work for Dutch television.
“And I remember we were saying ‘Harry Maguire was by far the worst player on the pitch’. And then, two months later, €90m.”
Adam Lallana’s late equaliser rescued a point for Liverpool after Marcus Rashford had put United in front.
It was the first time Liverpool hadn’t tasted victory this season but manager Jurgen Klopp was scathing of United’s tactics.
He said: “This year, last year, the year before, they just defend, that’s how it is.
“It’s OK and not a criticism, it’s just a fact. You see it, everybody is happy.
“When you think about when United plays against Liverpool, you think both teams are trying like this and that but it’s not usually.
“Again, the quality – we are the one team, everybody is on their toes when United plays against us.
“That’s why with the quality they have, set up like they set up, it’s really difficult.”
