Man Utd ready £2.5m Edinson Cavani pay rise that could set up perfect Erling Haaland plan | Football | Sport

Manchester United are ready to put in place a long-term plan in the transfer window that could see them sign Erling Haaland. But it means Edinson Cavani will be in line for a major pay rise as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains desperate to keep hold of the striker.

United look set to extend Cavani’s contract by another season after personal pleas from Solskjaer.

The Uruguay international will be out of contract by June this year and has been linked with a return to South America with Boca Juniors interested in his services.

But after a fine spell of form in recent weeks, the Red Devils have ramped up their efforts to keep hold of the 34-year-old with Solskjaer explaining the impact he has on the squad.

“The reason we’re here is because we’ve got a centre-forward who has scored four goals during the tie,” he said, after stellar performances against AS Roma in the Europa League.

“Edinson has shown again why we want to keep him at Old Trafford.

“Football has its own language. Edinson has proven tonight, in previous games and throughout his career what a centre-forward should be doing both on and off the ball, both preparing for games and recovering from games.”

And according to The Sun, United are prepared to give Cavani a pay rise of £2.5m to stay an extra year – which could pave the way for Haaland.

Borussia Dortmund have insisted that the Norway international is going nowhere despite widespread interest in his services from across Europe.

They have slapped a whopping £130m price tag on the striker to ward off interest – though his release clause will come into effect next year when he can leave for £64m.

With Cavani bowing out at the end of next season, it will give United the perfect chance to bring Haaland in – though they will have to battle with Europe’s best clubs.

Real Madrid are the frontrunners for his signature after Mino Raiola met up with Florentino Perez, with Barcelona also in the hunt.

Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in Haaland in the Premier League but Solskjaer will hope that the fact he coached him at Molde will give him an advantage in the race for the 20-year-old.
