Wantaway Bayern Munich star Benjamin Pavard sent a public message to Raphael Varane on Monday night. The Manchester United defender bagged a late winner against Wolves to get Erik ten Hag‘s second season at the helm off to a promising start.
Three points on the board will be a huge relief for the Red Devils, whose performance left plenty to be desired at Old Trafford. Wolves could easily have won the contest, with Matheus Cunha running riot but ultimately missing a sequence of golden chances.
Varane made sure the visitors were punished late on by nodding in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross. And the former Real Madrid man was in a celebratory mood after the final whistle, posting a picture to Instagram with the caption: “COME ONNNN!!!!!”
While comments from United team-mates Jadon Sancho, Amad and Kobbie Mainoo were to be expected, a message of encouragement from Pavard was not.
The Bayern ace left two fire emojis on Varane’s post to fuel rumours that he has his heart set on a move to Old Trafford. Many have viewed the comment as an act of desperation as the two clubs remain deadlocked over a potential price tag.
Pavard is believed to have informed the German giants that he is intent on leaving the club this summer. However, United’s top-end offer of £29million is still around £10m short of Bayern’s minimum valuation, according to reports.
The former Stuttgart star has been left in limbo as a result, with just over two weeks remaining of the summer transfer window for the parties to find a solution.
Pavard became a household name upon winning the World Cup with France in 2018. Having made his senior breakthrough at Lille, the 6ft 1in star has been in the Bundesliga for the past seven years.
With only one year remaining on his contract, Bayern are under pressure to cash in while they can this summer amid the looming threat of losing him for free in 12 months’ time.
