Fernandes was seen passionately celebrating Cavani’s crucial goal later in the match, with his own will to win clear to see.

The Portuguese star has enjoyed a blistering first season with the Red Devils, but admitted his only frustration was not winning a trophy.

“I think the first 12 months, the 11 months for me [here], have been great,” he told the club’s official site. “Of course, the main thing I want, I didn’t achieve, until now, is the trophies. That is clear.

“We really can do that in 2021 and, of course, I think, at the end of everything, what we did in the last 11 months was really good. I’m very happy to be here and to be part of this biggest club.”

United now face Leicester City on Boxing Day, before hosting Wolves in what appears a tricky festive schedule.
