Man Utd news: Ed Woodward can finally deliver dream transfer that Mourinho blocked | Football | Sport

Ed Woodward may be heading out the door at Old Trafford but there will be a moment of personal salvation should he finally complete the capture of Raphael Varane for Manchester United this summer. The executive vice-chairman will still be at the centre of a big decision this summer before he walks away from his role at the end of the calendar year.

Given the week United have had both on and off the field, the club is facing yet another decisive summer before the start of next season.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has undoubtedly driven United to their healthiest place post-Sir Alex Ferguson, doubts remain over whether he is the man to lead them back to the Premier League summit.

That was clear on two occasions this week as United fell to consecutive home defeats to Leicester and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

United will now target two or three stellar acquisitions that will enable them to attempt to close the gap on Manchester City next term.

None more so than back in 2018 when, according to the Manchester Evening News, Woodward earmarked Varane as one of two signings for manager Jose Mourinho.

He also wanted to bring PSG’s Marco Verratti to the club, but Mourinho allegedly said no to both deals.

Managers have ultimately had the final say on most of the transfers during Woodward’s spell at the helm, undermining his power and responsibility.

And if he can now finally pull off the signing of Varane, it would be the perfect parting gift for Solskjaer.

Unlike Mourinho, the Norwegian is very much enchanted by the idea of adding Varane’s quality to the squad.

United are in the market for a new centre-back, particularly after tying down Edinson Cavani for another year in attack.

While Woodward has been driven out of the club by the supporters, bringing in Varane is certainly one way to enhance his reputation ahead of his impending departure.

The capture would also represent a huge statement of intent from United heading into the new campaign.

It’s also the kind of signing that would increase expectancy and pressure levels on Solskjaer, something that could make or break him next season.
