Ajax frontman Brian Brobbey has revealed he is watching lots of Manchester United this season on television and it’s all because of his former manager Erik ten Hag. The 20-year-old broke into the first team at the Johan Cruyff Arena under the new Red Devils boss before completing a failed move to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021.
Now Brobbey has already returned to Amsterdam having also rejected the chance to reunite with Ten Hag at United this summer.
Yet despite turning his nose up at a move to Old Trafford, Brobbey has openly admitted he is keeping watch on United’s performances under his former coach.
He told Volkskrant: “I will soon be sitting in front of the TV for Erik.
“I don’t particularly look at the strikers. I’m looking for Erik ten Hag.”
“I want to do the same as Ryan Gravenberch: bring the club a lot of money in a few years.”
Ajax have already made their fair share of cash from United this summer despite failing to receive a compensation fee for Ten Hag.
The Red Devils forked out £57million to sign Lisandro Martinez ahead of Arsenal before splashing an additional £86m on Antony.
Brobbey was part of United’s thinking earlier in the summer when they were on the lookout for attacking reinforcements.
Cristiano Ronaldo had just communicated internally that he was keen to seek a new challenge due to the lack of Champions League football.
Therefore, United began to ponder a number of potential backup options for both Ronaldo and Anthony Martial – in case the Portuguese did indeed depart.
Ten Hag’s prior relationship with Brobbey was an added bonus given the forward is widely considered to be one of the best-attacking prospects in European football.
Although the door has been closed for now, Brobbey has already planted the seed that he would be open to an Old Trafford move in the future.
