Manchester United were far from awful in their Europa League clash with Sevilla yet crashed to defeat regardless, with Suso and Luuk de Jong sending the La Liga side through to the final. While that’s the case, however, the defeat shows Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs reinforcements this transfer window. So Express Sport will now look at the four signings that must be made if they’re to improve next season.
1. Jadon Sancho
Unless you’ve spent lockdown in outer space, you’d know United want to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho this summer.
Solskjaer already has a star-studded attack, with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood all shining this season.
But Sancho would give the Red Devils another option going forward. And, against Sevilla, it was clear to see why the club are so keen to sign the 20-year-old.
Rashford, in particular, was off the boil. The England international hasn’t looked right since the restart and will now benefit from some time off.
Martial and Greenwood weren’t up to scratch, either, and it was telling that Solskjaer took so long to throw on Odion Ighalo and Daniel James.
Sancho would give them an extra body in attack and, had he been playing, the match against Sevilla should have turned out differently.

3. A left-back
There’s no denying that Brandon Williams is a talent.
But the left-back was the worst player on the pitch against Sevilla, with Jesus Navas giving him a chastening evening in Germany.
United have Luke Shaw at their disposal but there’s still a sense they need a world-class left-back if they’re to challenge for major titles going forward.
Sevilla’s own Sergio Reguilon would be worth pursuing, with the Real Madrid loanee starring on the night.
And while Shaw and Williams are both good players, neither is comparable to club legends Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin.

4. An extra midfield threat
United have relied on Bruno Fernandes for goals from the middle of the park.
But that can’t always be the case and is exactly why the Red Devils need to sign an extra midfield threat in this summer’s transfer window.
Paul Pogba was abject against Sevilla and Jack Grealish would have been a good introduction off the bench to freshen things up at a time where the France international struggled.
Ajax’s Donny van de Beek could be a good signing, too.
And United just need another goalscoring threat from midfield to boost that department.
