Man Utd ‘ignore Ralf Rangnick chat’ as preferred Erik ten Hag successor becomes clear | Football | Sport

Manchester United appear to have ignored a recommendation from Ralf Rangnick as the club weighs up potential replacements for manager Erik ten Hag, according to reports. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have a significant decision to make on Ten Hag’s future ahead of their first full season in charge of football operations.

The Dutchman has a contract at Old Trafford until the end of next season, but Ratcliffe’s £1.3billion investment for a 27.7 per cent stake has brought his position under the spotlight.

Uncertainty has been heightened by United’s underwhelming results in his second campaign at the helm, which included a Champions League group-stage exit with just one win from six games.

The Red Devils are also at serious risk of missing out on a spot in the competition next term, sitting 11 points behind fourth-place Aston Villa, and face a daunting tie against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if INEOS decide to start afresh this summer by appointing their own manager to join a new-look sporting structure at Old Trafford.

According to i, former United interim boss Rangnick recommended that the club pursues Julian Nagelsmann, whose contract as Germany manager runs until Euro 2024 later this year.

However, ex-Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea head coach Graham Potter looks to be in pole position to enter the hot seat if Ten Hag is dismissed.

The Sun report that Dan Ashworth, who looks set to become United’s new sporting director, met Potter last weekend.

And it’s claimed that the 48-year-old is Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford’s preferred candidate, with the same outlet reporting the former met him in December.

Potter’s appointment would be met with intrigue after his disastrous spell at Chelsea under the tumultuous Todd Boehly regime.

He lasted just six months before getting the sack last April and has bided his time across the year that followed as he prepares to return to the game in the right job.
