Manchester United have a shortlist of three midfielders as they look to bolster their squad, it has been claimed. The club have endured a problematic season under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. However, with the January transfer window now open, they could bolster their ranks.
United’s current midfielders have all endured difficult campaigns, albeit for a variety of reasons.
Paul Pogba started the season in fine fettle but has been sidelined through injury ever since a 2-2 draw with Atalanta in November.
Donny van de Beek continues to barely play, despite Rangnick making it clear he wanted the former Ajax star to stay at Old Trafford.
And the likes of Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay have all struggled for consistency, resulting in the team often being outdone in the middle of the park.
United are aware they require reinforcements in that department if they’re to climb up the Premier League table.
And Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, has claimed they have three players on their radar, even if their preference is to splash the cash in the summer.

It’s stated they’re eyeing Ruben Neves, who has dazzled for Wolves ever since moving from Porto in 2017.
Neves was the best player on the pitch as they won 1-0 at Old Trafford last week, despite Joao Moutinho finding the net.
And United could try and bring him in to play alongside compatriots Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes every week.
Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni is another under consideration, with the 21-year-old helping France win the Nations League last year.
And the third target for United is Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara, who will become a free agent at the end of the campaign.
When it comes to signing any of the trio, the Red Devils may find it tricky midway through the season.
Wolves and Monaco would demand around £50million for both Neves and Tchouameni respectively, with both players vital assets.
Kamara, however, would be available for a cheaper £15m given his contractual situation over in France.
As well as potential signings, United could lose several players this month.
Anthony Martial wants out, having struggled for regular action ever since Ronaldo’s Hollywood homecoming back in the summer.
Sevilla, Barcelona and Newcastle are all interested in the France international, while Lyon are a long shot.
Van de Beek is eager to leave having seen a move to Everton break down back in the summer.
Eric Bailly is also open to departing, though the fact he’s away at the African Cup of Nations could deter potential suitors from going after him right now.
United would potentially let Jesse Lingard go if they receive a suitable offer, with his deal expiring in the summer.
And Dean Henderson could still be loaned out, even if Rangnick told the England international he wants to keep him until the end of the season.
Speaking about the possibility of new signings earlier this month, meanwhile, Rangnick kept his cards close to his chest.
“[It’s] too early now,” he said.
“The current squad is big enough, with a lot of competition in the squad.
“To speak about future players coming into the club doesn’t make sense at this stage when we have to find out which player is in which position, the best possible solution for every game.
“Right now for me, it doesn’t make sense to think about future players.
“My full focus is on the current squad and to find for each game the best possible formation and line-up.”
