Manchester United‘s director of football John Murtough is reportedly interested in bringing RB Leipzig playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai to Old Trafford, according to reports. The 21-year-old, who has been admired by United-linked managerial candidate Ralf Rangnick for some time, is widely regarded as one of European football’s most exciting young talents.

Szoboszlai burst onto the scene with Red Bull Salzburg back in 2019, earning links to a number of Premier League sides as a result of his age-defying performances.

He went on to earn a move to sister club Leipzig in January of this year, preceding manager Jesse Marsch’s subsequent arrival in the Bundesliga from Salzburg.

The Hungarian maestro has since emerged as a key man for his new club, chipping in with six goals and assists from just 10 league appearances.

He has also established himself at international level, racking up 17 appearances for Hungary since making his debut two years ago.

Szoboszlai is already being tipped to leave Leipzig in search of bigger and better things in the near future and it seems as though United could soon be willing to offer him a way out.

The Red Devils have been tracking his progress since last summer and would be keen on securing his signature if the opportunity arises, according to SportBILD.

The report claims that Szoboszlai, like many of his Leipzig team-mates, has an ‘escape clause’ written into his contract as a way of allowing him to join a big club.

It is said that he can leave for between £51million and £60m, a figure that would give Leipzig a profit of around £20m on the fee paid to Salzburg over the summer.

United are believed to be considering whether to pay Szoboszlai’s release clause, while Atletico Madrid have also been credited with a desire to sign him for themselves.

The versatile forward has long been revered by Rangnick, who has been mentioned as a potential candidate to replace under-fire United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent weeks.

The former reportedly identified Szoboszlai as a priority target for AC Milan, the club he was expected to manage after entering advanced talks with the San Siro giants last year.

They eventually decided to snub Rangnick and tie down current boss Stefano Pioli to a new deal, but not before Szoboszlai had already spoken to the German coach to discuss a move.

Rangnick previously spent time as Red Bull’s Head of Sport and Development, during which he oversaw the player’s emergence at Salzburg.

If the 63-year-old is appointed to succeed Solskjaer at United in the near future, it seems likely that Szoboszlai could be the first name on his radar with regards to the transfer market.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether United will be able to tempt the Leipzig man into joining the club either in January or when next summer rolls around.

The Red Devils have raided the market for exciting young forwards on plenty of recent occasions, with the likes of Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo arriving at Old Trafford during Solskjaer’s time in charge.

Szoboszlai remains under contract at Leipzig until the summer of 2026, but if United are prepared to match his reported exit clause, a move could soon be on the horizon.
