United were far from comfortable again at Old Trafford as they scraped a narrow 1-0 victory over Premier League new boys Luton, with Victor Lindelof smashing home from close range in the second half.

And it proved to be a nervy time for Ten Hag, who was animated throughout the second half as he watched his side cling on to all three points.

He will have to grin and bear it against Everton, as assistants Mitchell van der Gagg and Steve McClaren will be in temporary charge of preparing the team.

But Ten Hag is confident they can handle the task, adding: “We have a very competent coaching staff and they will take over. Of course, to a certain point I can be involved, but as I say, my coaching staff are very competent.”
