Man City transfer news: Premier League defenders Pep Guardiola should scout for January | Football | Sport

Manchester City have been caught out by their decision to not replace Vincent Kompany this summer.

The Belgian left the Etihad to become player-manager at Anderlecht, and City had only three recognised centre-backs in their first-team squad.

But, star man Aymeric Laporte went down injured against Brighton and Hove Albion last month, and could be out until February with a knee problem.

Then, England international John Stones picked up a muscle injury in training, and is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.

With only Nicolas Otamendi as an established centre-back, Pep Guardiola may dip into the transfer market for a short-term solution.

These are the four Premier League stars that Guardiola should consider making a bid for in January.

Caglar Soyuncu

Although he doesn’t have a wealth of first-team experience in the Premier League, Calgary Soyuncu could be the answer to City’s problems.

He’s had an excellent start to the season for Leicester City, and has seamlessly fit into the team in the wake of Harry Maguire’s departure.

At 23, the Turkey international has plenty of room for improvement, and Guardiola could be the man to take him to the next level.

Soyuncu is a towering figure, and is a very good passer of the ball. He may also be able to prevent the successful execution of that dreaded near-post corner routine that has hampered City so many times in the past.

Jonny Evans

No, he’s not the most conventional player that you’d associated with City – especially after his history with Manchester United – but the 31-year-old could help to keep Otamendi in tow.

Guardiola has been linked to Evans in the past, and would probably jump at the chance to join the Champions as he enters the twilight of his career.

The Leicester man is known for his strong concentration, which is the exact quality City will be looking out for, with Otamendi prone to committing himself unexpectedly.

But, Brendan Rodgers may ask for a big transfer fee for either Evans or Soyuncu, given he’s – somehow – made £80million on Maguire recently, and he’d also be forced to find a new centre-back himself.

Jan Vertonghen

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has had a turbulent start to the season, after being dropped for the opening two matches of the season.

He was reportedly fuming to miss out against Aston Villa for Spurs’ first match of the season, and City should consider capitalising on the unrest.

He’d be guaranteed first-team football at the Etihad Stadium, at least until the return of Laporte.

Vertonghen is the exact commanding figure that Guardiola was hoping to sign this summer.

James Tarkowski

As one of the most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League, Burnley’s James Tarkowski has quietly gone about his business at Turf Moor.

The England international would be a perfect addition to City’s squad; especially with his ability to win aerial duels and make clearances.

City’s kryptonite for the past 12 months has been set-pieces, having most recently conceded a near-post corner to Norwich City.

Tarkowski would help to improve City’s defending from this aspect, and should definitely be on the shortlist for a January switch.
