Richard Keys has hit out at Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard declared he did not sign £100million man Jack Grealish to score goals. The England international has come under scrutiny after he was named in Gareth Southgate’s latest squad ahead of Jadon Sancho – despite a lacklustre start to the 2022/23 season.

Grealish issued the perfect response though when he netted inside one minute for City in their Premier League visit to Wolves on Saturday lunchtime.

However, prior to the match at Molineux, former Sky Sports presenter Keys called his manager into question over his defence of the attacker.

Dismissing statistics, Guardiola to the media: “We didn’t sign for the incredible goals or assists at Aston Villa. It was another reason and when he played he did it. I want [him] to make goals and assists and he does too. But it’s not about that, it’s about his contribution without the ball and what he can produce for the other ones.”

And when asked whether Guardiola was concerned with the criticism Grealish is facing, he replied: “Always I say to them: ‘You know exactly how you played, what we were looking for – what was the plan of the game, if it works or didn’t work.’

The former Aston Villa poster boy is adamant he will get back to his best in order to prove he was worth every penny of his British-record transfer fee.

“The attackers are the ones the manager rotates a lot,” Grealish said.

“Not everyone is going to play every game as we have so much talent.

“When you get that chance you have to grab it with both hands and that is what I will try and do.

“Last year I was settling in – but I want to start performing the way that got me the move here. I did at times last season, just maybe not consistently enough.”

Grealish, who managed just three Premier League goals last season, had not scored since May before his early strike in the Black Country.

Despite his underwhelming figures, Southgate seems adamant he will have a big part to play for England in November at the World Cup.

The Three Lions take on Italy and Germany in their final Nations League matches before Qatar.
