Lockdown life posing no problem to Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen is “very laid back” about catching COVID-19, stating that while he is being careful, “if it happens it happens”.

As the virus continued to spread throughout the world during the 2020 season, three drivers – Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll and Lewis Hamilton – tested positive for it, while Lando Norris has done so since.

In response to the pandemic, various countries around the world have implemented lockdowns in the last year, including in Monaco where Verstappen and a number of other drivers live.

While more than happy having to stay inside, the Dutchman is not overly concerned about catching the virus himself.

“I do a lot anyway online and I have a lot of fun still. I still had a good year,” he told GPFans.

“My friends also got tested a lot and if it happens [catching Covid-19] it happens. I think the younger guys, we seem to cope with it a bit better and it’s not like I’m looking for Covid but I’m very laid back. Of course, you look after yourself and you are careful but you can’t control everything in life.

“I saw my family a little bit less but, again, there is FaceTime. There is a lot of technology so you still talk to them and for me, it was no problem at all.”

Driver and team face coverings are available now on the official Formula 1 store!

Verstappen: Replace stewards with boxing rings

During the initial height of the pandemic, in early 2020, lockdown measures were in place all over the world, and Verstappen was one of many drivers who spent his time competing in sim racing, driving alongside McLaren’s Lando Norris for Team Redline.

He says that being his hobby made it easier for him to stay home, but imagines it is more difficult for those who enjoy outdoor activities more.

“It also depends on what your interests are,” the Red Bull driver added.

“If you’re a guy who really loves the outside all the time and loves to meet people every day then, of course, the lockdown is very tough.

“I think I am very happy to just be at home and just really chill out because we are travelling so much. So, for me, actually the lockdown wasn’t that bad.

“I loved being at home for once for so long. You actually discover your apartment a bit more!”
