Ibrahima Konate has explained why he chose the No 5 shirt at Liverpool after completing his transfer from RB Leipzig. Konate became Liverpool’s first signing of the summer window at the end of May when the Reds agreed a £36million fee with Leipzig and he is now settling in at his new club ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 22-year-old centre-back has arrived on Merseyside to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s options after a challenging campaign.

Liverpool were on the lookout for defensive reinforcements this summer after Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all suffered serious injuries last season.

They signed Preston’s Ben Davies and Schalke’s Ozan Kabak in January but needed more long-term solutions for the coming campaign.

Konate was quickly snapped up with Liverpool paying his release clause to add the France under-21 international to their ranks.

Gini Wijnaldum’s move to Paris Saint-Germain left the No 5 shirt free upon Konate’s arrival and he has now explained why he went for that number.

Asked what fans can expect from him next season, Konate replied: “I am big, I am strong and I am not scared with the ball.

“I can score more with my foot than my head, it is a little bit strange! This is me.

“Yes, I have this quality, but I have to work again and again and more and more and more for being a very good defender.”

With Van Dijk and Gomez back fit and preparing for the 2021/22 campaign, Konate will be afforded time to ease himself into a new league, but he is raring to go.

“I have watched some Premier League games and everybody knows there is so much intensity, strong players,” he said.

“This is difficult but I [will] love the challenge.”
