The Premier League’s decision to continue the fulfilment of their Christmas fixtures has coincided with the FA Cup banning replays in rounds three and four due to the impact on the festive schedule. And Jurgen Klopp may well be delighted with the news judging on previous comments he’s made.

An emergency meeting was held between chiefs of the current Premier League clubs after six of the 10 fixtures scheduled for the weekend were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

With clubs such as Tottenham and Burnley now three games behind their league rivals, there feels somewhat of an imbalance in the league and many were concerned about that occurring over the festive period.

Postponing the fixtures between December 28 and 30 was considered a serious possibility as clubs looked to accept a ‘circuit break’.

But the majority of Premier League clubs were against such plans going ahead.

However, FA Cup replays will be removed from the next two rounds.

And with the Reds’ boss famously against the ruling of replays, he will be happier than anyone at the new legislation.

Klopp and his first-team players famously missed Liverpool’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Aston Villa in December 2019, before the club did the same again just weeks later against Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, meaning the under-23 squad had to play both games.

The Villa game came when the Reds’ first-team were at the FIFA Club World Cup, understandable as the tournament was in Qatar.

“Of course I could, but that would be a complete misunderstanding of management and coaching.

“It’s not about showing up for the team for two days or one day training and now I tell the boys [what to do]. They need their coach and they get their coach.”

Liverpool take on Shrewsbury in a rendezvous of the 2019 clash on January 9.

And with a hectic fixture list – which involves four games in just eleven days prior to the cup tie – Klopp could field his younger players once again.
