Jurgen Klopp had his sights set on Manchester United‘s Antony as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah two years ago, it has been claimed.

The Liverpool winger, 32, has been consistently linked with a move away from Anfield over the past few seasons due to his contractual situation.

The Egyptian’s current deal expires at the end of the current season and it is unclear if he will be a Liverpool player come 2025-26 or not.

But in 2022, Klopp considered Antony as a possible successor if Salah were to depart.

As reported by The Times, Salah was in contract renewal talks with Liverpool, with FSG’s Mike Gordon eventually deciding it would be best to renew his contract while Klopp explored other options just in case.

Antony, who was shining at Ajax at the time, was one of those options but instead joined the Red Devils that summer for £82million, contributing to just 17 goals in 87 appearances since signing.

It remains uncertain how Antony might have performed under a different manager and in a different city, but it’s unlikely he could have filled Salah’s shoes.

Earlier this month, the Liverpool legend took to social media to drop an update on his future, expressing the team’s ambition to compete for the Premier League title following their 2-1 victory over Brighton.

He wrote: “Top of the table is where this club belongs. Nothing less. All teams win matches but there’s only 1 champion in the end.

“That’s what we want. Thank you for your support last night. No matter what happens, I will never forget what scoring at Anfield feels like.”

Salah also confessed earlier this season that “it’s my last year at the club”, following Liverpool‘s impressive 3-0 victory over Man United.

Liverpool supporters are still hoping a new deal will be agreed for the man who leads the way in both goals and assists for the club this term.
