Roberto Firmino has caused a stir amongst Liverpool fans, after liking Richarlison’s Instagram post of the Everton forward celebrating his goal at Anfield. The Toffees ran out 2-0 winners in the Merseyside derby, securing their first win across Stanley Park against the Reds since 1999.
Richarlison struck the opener inside three minutes before Gylfi Sigurdsson added a second from the spot, after Trent Alexander-Arnold brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Liverpool’s top-four hopes are now starting to fade as they struggle to navigate the crisis that has ruined their Premier League title defence.
The Reds have now lost their past four Premier League home matches after Burnley ended their 68-match unbeaten streak at Anfield.
With emotions running high in the Liverpool camp as they bid to get their season back on track, fans on Twitter have now become frustrated with the action of their Brazilian frontman Firmino.
The false-nine liked his compatriot Richarlison’s picture on Instagram of him celebrating his opener and although Firmino is friends with the Everton forward, with the two having previously been pictured together at Firmino’s wife’s birthday party, some supporters have not taken it well.
One wrote on Twitter: “When Firmino sees that picture of Richarlison celebrating at Anfield after defeating Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in 22 years, he should feel pain. I don’t care about them being teammates/friends. It’s not on.”
While another said: “Firmino liking Richarlison’s insta post might actually be the last straw for me.”
To which somebody replied in defence of Firmino: “They are probably friends…”
“Doesn’t sit right with me under the current circumstances,” said the fan in response.
Another posted: “I don’t care if Firmino is friends with Richarlison or not. I don’t care if they’re both Brazilian. He can clearly see the fans aren’t happy and that the team is s*** right now.
“What sense does it make to like that picture when he knows everyone will see?”
“I don’t even care, no one can defend Roberto Firmino liking that Richarlison post,” tweeted another infuriated supporter.
Firmino and Richarlison know each other well from their time together with the Brazilian national team.
But with Liverpool feeling the pressure and fighting to turn their fortunes around, it’s understandable why some supporters may feel aggrieved with Firmino’s actions.
Liverpool take on Sheffield United next Monday before hosting Chelsea at Anfield in what could prove a decisive game in the race for Champions League qualification.
They will be without Jordan Henderson for the next five weeks, after he picked up a groin injury.
