Lando Norris is backing his fellow Brit Lewis Hamilton to upset the odds and claim a record eighth World Championship.
In recent years Hamilton has not faced much resistance to his iron grip on Formula 1, but that has all changed this season.
Hamilton heads into his home race, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with a 32-point deficit to Max Verstappen to address.
It is a very difficult challenge for Hamilton with Verstappen looking to make it four victories in a row, but Norris is backing his compatriot Hamilton to bring the Drivers’ Championship home in 2021 for a record eighth time, even though the momentum is certainly with Verstappen.
“I’m hoping it’s coming home of course, it looks a tough battle,” he told Sky F1 when asked if the title is coming home or going Dutch.
“Max is looking very strong, so a high probability that it is going to go Dutch, but I’m supporting Lewis, I’m supporting my fellow countryman, I wish him all the best.
“And both of them all the best, in their fight for the Championship.”
George Russell is attempting to earn himself a seat at Mercedes alongside Hamilton for 2022, but if he lands the job, will he be heading there to partner an eight-time World Champion?
Russell could not choose which way the 2021 title battle is going to go, but did say that Verstappen has earned this opportunity to be right there in the fight.
“There’s a long way to go, you can never discount Mercedes and Lewis,” he said.
“They are an exceptional team, but Max and Red Bull seem to be on it at the moment, and everything is just going their way.
“But in sport, in Formula 1, things can change in a heartbeat.
“I think it’s going…I don’t know, I’m really torn. I hope it goes towards Lewis and Mercedes, but Max is doing an exceptional job and he deserves the opportunity he has got at the moment.”
