Kalidou Koulibaly opens up on Man Utd and Chelsea transfer links and provides update | Football | Sport

Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in signing Kalidou Koulibaly this summer and the Napoli defender has provided a big update on his future plans.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to finish his squad rebuilding project by finding a new centre-back partner for Harry Maguire.

Frank Lampard has his own defensive woes to fix at Stamford Bridge after conceding a shed load of goals this campaign.

Koulibaly would demand a fee of around £80m and Napoli are under no pressure to sell the 29-year-old.

But United and Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their transfer plans as Koulibaly has suggested his future lies in Serie A.

“In football, you never know what happens,” Koulibaly told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I never spoke to Napoli about leaving. If we have to find a solution, we will find it, but I have never talked about the transfer market.

“I also read in the newspapers about my future. But I only want to think about playing, I am 100 per cent [committed to] Napoli and it bothers me to be linked, every day, to this or that European club.

“We will see what the president (Aurelio De Laurentiis) will decide and if he proposes to extend my contract, that would allow me to end my career here.

“At the moment, I still have a three-year contract and I am not thinking of anything else but Napoli.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Frank Lebeouf thinks Koulibaly would be more suited to the Blues than United.

“I will never ask him to go to Manchester United for many reasons,” he said.

“I want him to win some stuff and I think Manchester United is not the club that they used to be and they’re not ready to win stuff.

“I think Liverpool would be a good fit with [Virgil] van Dijk, that would be fantastic.

“Paris Saint-Germain as well with Marquinhos, there would be two great central defenders.

“I think Chelsea will need a player like that. I don’t know if Koulibaly will be interested, but even if they have two very good central defenders, Koulibaly I think belongs to another level and would fit very well.

“I know he has a link with Liverpool, Van Dijk and Koulibaly at the back – my God, that’s going to be another Red season I guess.

“Definitely with Van Dijk, and when you’re a defender like Koulibaly, that would be the best central defence in the world.”
