James Corden has slammed owners of the Big Six clubs who have confirmed their participation in a breakaway European Super League. Corden opened his popular US late-night show with an explosive rant on the greed of those involved to destroy the game as we know it.

Corden is famously a West Ham fan and was very clear in his assessment of the announcement on the Late, Late Show.

It echoes statements from Boris Johnson, the FA, UEFA as well as pundits like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.

The European Super League would effectively replace the Champions League but there would be no relegation with 15 teams guaranteed to compete every season.

“The truth is, this whole thing, making this move, these teams, these owners are killing, they will kill hundreds of other football teams that compete with them and have competed with them many times over the years, disregarding the fanbases of those teams and disregarding the fanbases of their own teams who are devastated too,” Corden said.

“And the reason these dreams have been shattered and discarded is so that a group of billionaires can buy themselves a bigger boat, or a second boat.

“Football is a working class game where anyone can beat anyone on their day, and it’s that that makes it incredible, it’s that that’s made it the global force it is today.”

He added: “And if this happens, and unfortunately I really do think it will, I don’t want to be over dramatic but I do think it’s the end of the sport that we love. It truly is.

“I think it’s going to happen and I don’t think there’s anything we can do about it.”
